We learned all about rules, where things are, how centers work and much more! We jumped right into tall, fall, and small letters! Writing is my most favorite subject to teach and I am a stickler about it! So I jump right in getting those capital letters out of the middle of words! AHH! That bothers me so much!lol
We started out with our mini lesson and sorted those letters to the right category. Then they started their pocket chart activity during center time. I attached the anchor posters because the students have a very hard time with tall, fall, and small letters. I have 10 centers per week but only 5 of them I have to plan for. They complete 2 centers daily. That will be a post later :)
Get this center here. I do partner centers because it cuts down on noise and paying during center time. I DRA'd my kids this week so that I can put thtem into reading groups next week. I got them all done! Yea!!!!
We also went over how the word wall works, where it is and how to use it. I put mine over my board. All of the cards have magnets on them so that I can bring them down on my board to show them how to chunk words or combine them to make new words. I used to line them at the bottom of my board which was awesome but I write on my board too much and it took too much space. So this works better!
We also discussed out EQ's (Essential Questions). We discussed what they were for the week and what they mean. This is basically what I am teaching every week and what they are learning. We touched on these this week but will repeat the same ones next week since this week focused on getting used to routines.
We did start our math centers and work a little on number order. They were putting numbers in order from 1-100. Believe it or not this is no easy task! I have 5 math groups that rotate daily.
I used this week to assess them with a simple math assessment so that I can group my math groups according to ability next week. This week they just explored centers.
This is just a few of the millions of things we did this week! I have completed my plans for next week and ready to go! I also broke down and bought a laminator! I tried not to but I couldn't help it! Only 24.88 at Walmart! I am off to go laminate!! Bye!

Looks great!!!
ReplyDeleteI had that laminator and it was great, be careful not to do to much in one day. I used it to much the other day and burned the wheels out so it won't roll any more. I broke down and bought the more exoensive one at SAMs club after that. It was $100, but worth the time I can spend laminating at home with my son instead of at school without him!
ReplyDeleteJust wondering what state you teach in. Your comment about kindergarten struck a cord with me. I have taught both and the K curriculum I teach in TN is tough
and there wasn't a huge difference between that and when I taught first grade. I know TN has one of the more demanding u programs though so I was just
curious what yours is like!

Sounds like a great first week! Miss you ladies. And now that you told me about this affordable laminator, I'm going to break down and buy one! :)

@Marketta thanks for the tip! I will try not to overdo it!
ReplyDelete@Dana yes go get it!
@ Marketta I am in Georgia and our kindergarten program is great! I think there is a jump from every grade level as far as how the kids do things and an increase in work. I went over with my kids some of the differences such as things we learn like pronouns, verbs, double digit addition, and things like that. Our kindergarten program is very rigorous and our kindergarten teachers work very hard to have them ready for first grade. My son is in kindergarten at my school this year and I love it!!
ReplyDeleteI am from TN also and yes their program is awesome too! :)
Yes Georgia does offer a great program! We had a little boy register this year and his mom was very upset because K where they come from is either 1/2 day or your child naps after lunch. She was also upset when she saw that our classrooms didn't have the traditional "play" centers. I was surprised because we are normally behind the rest of the country in education ( or at least the media makes it seem like the south is!) and it seemed like we had a much better K program than where she was from!
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous! You have lucky kids!

Wow! I'm so impressed you got so much done the first week. We start next week and I'm so ready. Just found your blog and I will be following you. I'm a fellow UTK graduate!

Love your ideas. I have never heard the letters referred to as small, tall and fall. I teach preschool and think I might have to try that out this year. Please stop by my blog and link me if you like :) Thanks!

I have 2 of those laminators one for home and one for the classroom. (is that bad?) I LOVE them I got my first one when I taught Pre-k 4 years ago. If you make wearable nametags for your kids run them through it they will last longer!
