Dental Health Activity

This week we are working on dental health and I wanted to share a project that we did. We started by talking about flossing and believe it or not many of the kids did not really know how to floss! So of course I had to make an interactive lesson out of this! I have seen variations of this on pinterest of course. I used pink construction paper to make the mouth and drew on a tongue and then used mini marshmallows as the teeth. We watched a great clip on flossing on United streaming and got into a great discussion on how flossing and brushing helps keep your teeth healthy.
Next once we finished our little project and used green yarn to practice flossing our teeth. I showed them how to go between every tooth, They really got a kick out of this part!
We finished up by writing about our ideas that we discussed and they turned out awesome! Click here if you think you can use this activity in your room! Enjoy!

Oh and check out my president’s writing! I downloaded this cute printable from Gingersnaps (she has great stuff!) and my kids made the cutest little craft and did “If I were president writing!” CUTE!

Thank you so much for generously sharing this and many, many other activities! Your passion for teaching the "firsties" is obvious. Anyone who has ever taught 1st grade knows it takes passion and patience beyond belief. You do it so well!

I have my students make a similar marshmallow mouth each year. I add the string for floss too. Next week we will sing the dental health song and practice flossing. Then send those cuties home. The kinders love them! I like the idea of writing about it for first graders. My kids are writing a lot about teeth in their journals and they are going to do a connection writing sample after I read The Tooth book by Dr. Seuss. It's such an important topic and one the kids can all connect to.
Thanks for showing this great project!

Great interactive project in honor of Children's Dental Health Month!

We need more teachers to promote and educate kids (& parents) about optimal oral health.

    Thanks for sharing!
